In 1827, Luke and all his family {with the exception of two sons} were killed in an Indian raid
upon the settlers. Information also indicates that John Roberts, Sr. either died in the initial raid,
or died when trying to avenge his brother's death. There are many accounts of this event in the
publication Loose Leaves of the History of Lamar County by Ed. H. McCuistion.
Another version of the story is found in the book Six Months From Tennessee ~ by: Skipper Steely:
"The first documented murder of white settlers in Texas was that of Luke Roberts.
Luke and John Roberts had settled in where is now Lamar County, on the Upper PineCreek,
a mile or two from the Red River, in September, 1820.
This whole affair, which happened in April, 1827, was a fiasco. The Osage attacked the small
settlement and killed Roberts, and perhaps some others. The nephews and sons of
Luke Roberts, three in number, took out after the Osages, killing and scalping a Christian Osage
on the Grand River, near the Union Mission. Aroused by this, the larger body of Osages in turn pursued,
killed and scalped the entire party of five."
